Hrabětice – the village in the clouds

As the name implies, Hrabětice was built by count (hrabě) Albrecht Maxmilián
Desfours in about 1700. The first residents were farmers, although their mountainside fields yielded a meager living due to the high elevation.

That is why the settlement started out with just a few houses. In the late 18th century, however, the surrounding forest became home to glassworks, which allowed Hrabětice to grow. Roads began to be built, making the area easier to access. The steeper road, which leads directly to Janov, passes through Malý Semerink. The other road is longer but less steep and passes through Velký Semerink.

Seen from the pastures above the “chapel”, the peaks of the Krkonoše mountains rise in the distance.

You can see Malinový vrch and Královka on the way to the Slovanka observation tower.

The names are derived from the notorious mountain roads in Lower Austria. Today Hrabětice is part of Janov nad Nisou. The former sleepy settlement has transformed in recent years into a popular mountain resort. A number of ski lifts operate in the winter months, and the conditions are perfect for beginners and children learning to ski. A cross-country ski path connected to the Jizerská magistrála passes nearby the “chapel”, originally the fire brigade station. This area is ideal for cross-country skiing, hiking, cycling and scootering, thanks to the gently rolling Jizera Mountains.
